Storage Space Exhibitions focuses mainly on creating group exhibitions in the context of so called "problematic" locations and neighborhoods.

The home base of the Storage Space line of exhibitions is located in the Heesterveld art initiative in the Bijlmer ( a so called "problematic" neighborhood in the outskirts of Amsterdam which have a reputation of being a crime "infested" neighborhood.)

On the 28th of October we had the fourth Storage Space Exhibition in the Heesterveld art initiative in the Bijlmer.

Storage Space Exhibition #3

Heesterveld Artists alongside Rietveld artists exhibit their creations in and around the storage spaces of the Heesterveld building in the Bijlmer.

Heesterveld is the new cultural hot spot of the Bijlmer area, where creative people from Zuidoost and the rest of Amsterdam live, work, develop and exhibit their skills, art and entrepreneurship.

The Heesterveld building is located 50 meter from the Bullewijk metro station.

In the event besides artworks exhibited in the storage spaces we expanded to the grass area in front of the Heesterveld building with 'Archiving the Bijlmer', an outdoor archive by Elon Liberman and Neil Fortune created from found material from the Bijlmer area that was built in order to archive Bijlmer's junk,
live Freestyle Storytelling Spoken word by A.T.F ( Kitchell Samuël,Valery Levant and Joi Sears) and a live performance by Re'em Aharoni in one of the Heesterveld's apartments (H26).

On Friday, July 29 2011· 4:00pm - 10:00pm the second Storage Space Exhibition took place in the Heesterveld art initiative in Amsterdam Zuidoost.

In the exhibition 15 participating artists from the Heesterveld art initiative and the Rietveld academy exhibited their works inside and around the old storage spaces of the Heesterveld building.
The event was better and bigger than the first exhibition, with more participating artists, more visitors and higher quality art works.

On Saturday, July 9 · 10:00am - 7:00pm the first Storage Space Exhibition took place in the Heesterveld art initiative in Amsterdam Zuidoost.
It was a concept I proposed to YMERE the building company that owns the Heesterveld building, they accepted the concept and I gut a small budget to create and curate the exhibition.

In the exhibition ten participating artists from our art initiative and the Rietveld academy exhibited their works inside the old storage spaces of the Heesterveld building.
The event was successful and was the first in a line of exhibitions that followed.

Game Over

'Game Over' is a project me and Liran Weisman (my wife) are working on together.

Its a work commissioned by 'Radio 4' a radio station here in Holland.

They named the project '9 ways to eternity' and asked for video loops about death and eternity.

Music was supplied, about 15 long classic music pieces to choose from.

After some time in the editing room we made a trailer for the initial proposal

After two selection rounds and two versions to the 'Game Over' video we were selected among 8 other students from the V.A.V department in the Rietveld academy and our video will be presented at the 'Radio 4' website.

'Game Over' Final version:

“Game Over” is a work about the ambiguity of life and death, using virtual games as a tool, a

mirror for us as a society. Remixing different genres and aesthetics uncovers the paradigms of

the “game over” scene. It is an exploration of the beauty that lies in the uncanny. Through this

journey a perception of life, death and eternity is revealed.

The second assignment we gut from Maarten de Reus and Margriet Kruyver at the V.A.V department was Patterns of expectations.

I decided to develop something I started last year in the Basic year, My Exam Room painting which I posted here last year.

It started with some drawings:

Next I Moved to Canvas using marker, ink, pencils and acrilics

After painting I took it all to Photoshop to create some new connections and new patterns

I am not sure but I think I will come back to it in the future the use is a starting point or just to continue...

I decided to "envision" the future.

Master class - Betsabee Romero

On September 18th and 19th me and Liran Weisman (My wife) participated In a Master class held in the 'TropenMuseum' in Amsterdam by Betsabee Romero, a Mexican artist. (more information about the artist: http://www.aptglobal.org/view/artist.asp?ID=2434)

It was a small Master class, we where about 8 artists \ students in total and guest artist Henk Schiffmacher, A famous tattoo artist from Amsterdam (more information about the artist: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henk_Schiffmacher)

In the Master class we helped Betsabee to build a tattoo car to be presented as a part of Betsabee Romero's exhibition 'Cars and Traces' held in the 'TroopenMuseum' in Amsterdam.

The 20th of September was the final day of the Master class but me and Liran did not participate because we needed to attend a 5 days school excursion to Frankfurt.

Betsabee started with some background on the concept and instruction.

She gave us a tour in the exhibition she is building in the TropenMuseum - 'Cars and Traces'

We started to work on the car in the garden of the museum

First steps: measuring, cutting the fake skin and gluing it on to the car

Then Henk Schiffmacher came and some of us started painting and the rest continued working on the skin of the car

In the end of the 'Basis jaar' we had to prepare an exhibition room of our work and process and then had to setup \ build the room in one hour.

In the end of the one hour preparation of the room a committee of my teachers along with another teacher from another class as the head of the committee reviews my work, process, and development.

Replace an object in a situation

I wanted to create a situation of two boxes in which one of them is being replaced.

I talked to Bas, who said that "you do not necessarily need to show the original box".

This box was built in the final days before 'Beoordeiling' and did not get to go some more stages of development which it needs.

3 MP3 Videos

Rutger gave us a collection of mp3 files both music tracks and sound samples. We needed to select three and make a video for each one with the MP3 as the sound track.

I made some try-outs which where part good and part not but in the end I presented in my Exam room 3 videos on three different screens (Laptops) in a 'Triptych' formation.

We are having some more design classes from Matthias who asked us to make a pobicataion in the first semester.

This time he wanted us to document our work. Because I have started to do so with this blog in the beginning of the year, Matthias said that the blog needs an upgrade.

As you can see the new blog is more detailed and with all the assignments I did the whole year.

Make a Book

This time Bas wanted a book, just a book.

My first starting point was to make a library from a book.

The small 'Library in a book' is a nice artifact \ miniature but it cannot go pass it.

So instead, I started to work on a big book which will follow the logic of my 'Bolt' sculpture from the first semester.

Design for the mass

Vince Vijsma our design teacher now wanted us to design a product for the mass.

The product does not have to be manufactured \ made as prototype, so it can be pesented as a design.

My idea for the product is a USB lipstick which targets the market of young and teenage girls.

The product presents designated content such as tutorial, games, images, useful links ect... All related to lipstick, cosmetics and teenage girls.

The final work is a 3D demo and a USB stick glued to a Lipstick containing the content.

Rutger asked us to investigate "Non Places" and he defined it as an architecture assignment.

As a starting point, I made about 200 digital images and some drawings and paintings.

Painting Machine

We got a new design teacher in the beginning of the 2nd semster. His name is Vince Vijsma.

|He wanted us to design a tool for ourselves inspired by a 'Ted.com' movie.

(Ted.com is some kind of youtube for smart people :)

I was really inspired by a lecture by the dutch artist, Theo Jansen, who invents and builds self supporting creatures.

After a lot of brain activity I came up with an idea to make a 'Painting machine'.

Vince really liked the idea and I worked on it for about 6 weeks. Only after I finished I was told by friends that they did not believed the machine will "see the light of day", but it did.

'Gips' \ Space between Spaces

Gips in dutch means plaster.

We started investigating about the space in between spaces by doing drawings of such spaces.

Than we moved on to investigating clear tape (just the simple clear tape for office use) and all its uses in creating molds which we than used to create our plaster cast.

Erik Mattijssen started teaching us with a funny assignment in which each and every one of us (classmates) was wearing in his turn a funny object or sculpture and all the other class mates are drawing him quickly.

January Project - 'The Reverse Archive Of Time'

Evry Basis jaar in January there is a project called 'January poject' which the whole basis jaar (aprox: 160 students) works on one subject. This year the subject was 'doing time'
This year every class worked independently with its own theme within the subject 'doing time'.
Our class theme was 'The reverse archive of time'.
Because its an archive we needed categories, so we split in to two groups and every group made a category.
Our group was me, Michiel Harbers, Frija Van Dijk ank Shee Francisca. Because its a reverse archive we decided to start from the end and make a 'miscellaneous' category. So we did.

Various "Bad" sculptures in the subject of time placed inside 3 big wood transportation pallets connected together, hanged from the ceiling with four orange ropes and wrapped with industrial wrapping plastic.

In the beginning of the second semester we continued to learn with Hamid El kanbouhi for only two more weeks to be replaced by Erik Mattijssen.

Bastiaan Medik Gave us an open assignment related to sound.

My idea was to make "Sonar" as a sculpture.

Unfortunately My first, second, and final versions were not pictured because I made it only a week before mid-year exams and forgot to do so.

Rutger, my mentor, had another complicated assignment for us. It's called 'The other'.

Here is the assignment we got

"For this assignment the material is fixed. From ief, the lady in the wood workshop you buy 2 pieces of wood. You'll get two kinds.

Both pieces are approximately 120x120 cm. She knows about the project so mention my name and she'll give you the right stuff.

With this wood you make one or more piece(s) of furniture. You have to use all the wood. So no waste!

This/these piece(s) of furniture will play the main role in a performance you make called: “The Other”

No other materials or objects can be added except for yourself and what you say, sing or whatever you come up with."

The Sentence 'Six feet under' was introduced as an assignment from Hamid, our drawing and painting teacher.

Besides that we were free to paint \ draw, just fit it to the sentence...

Publication

Matthias Kreutzer gave us an assignment to make a publication containing 500 images we collected in relation to the tag words of the 'subjective library' assignment, which were than uploaded by us to a shared server.

Because all the students are making a publication containing the same images and the number of images is very large it was a challenge.

I made my publication as a thumbnail collection in order to allow for easier and faster recognition.

I printed on a thick chrome paper and connected with two staples on the top \ narrow part of the printed sheets. next to the staples i pinched two binding holes which in fact do not serve any kind of purpose.

This was a photographic assignment in which we needed to produce three connected images.

Texture investigation

Rutger Emmelkamp asked us to make a 'Texture investigation'. He gave us no other instructions whatsoever.

My starting point was some try-outs with acrylics and nylon on A4 paper but i quickly moved to a digital medium.

I created a series of "how to" images starting with a picture I made two years ago of an old book which then I darken by limiting the color field in Photoshop's 'Levels' repeatedly and magnify repeatedly as well to get a new texture.

Next step was to take that texture and make pictures of it in movement to get another new texture which then is darken and magnified for the last time.

The series was printed on A3 sheets and presented to the class.
